Rebates are great, but home energy savings is the goal
| March 31, 2010 ─ You have heard by now that the federal government ecoENERGY Retrofit – Homes Program is no longer accepting bookings for PRE-retrofit evaluations. The program will continue to be administered until March 31, 2011 so if you booked an appointment for a pre-retrofit evaluation prior to 5:00pm EST, April 1, 2010, or have completed the evaluation, or applied for re-entry to the program, you remain eligible to apply for a grant. | ![]() |
It is suggested that you complete your energy upgrades well in advance to allow enough time for your post-retrofit evaluation, as all post-retrofit evaluations must be completed by March 31, 2011. Contact the energy advisor that is listed on your pre-retrofit evaluation report or contact a licensed service organization and provide them with your file number. For more information, refer to the questions and answers.
At this time, it is anticipated that the affiliated Ontario Home Energy Savings Program and rebates, plus the Ontario Power Authority rebate will continue. Ask your energy audit company for additional information.
We encourage homeowners to have home energy audits conducted by certified professionals so they can identify best opportunities for energy efficiency improvements. The rebates which may remain in place as financial assistance are a secondary motivation for improving your home’s energy performance, lowering your fuel bills, and helping the environment through reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
Here are some of the best energy-wise home improvements which pay the biggest dividends by reducing energy and water consumption and reduce GHGs:
- New Energy Star™ oil-fired furnace or boiler
- Upgraded ceiling insulation
- Upgraded wall and basement insulation
- Caulking and sealing to improve air-tightness of your home
- New Energy Star™ windows and doors
- New, qualified low-flush toilets
